Dornan Engineering and Mace employed Sensetech Systems to deliver a complicated Life Safety System for the new UCL complex at Stratford Olympic Park.

The systems were fully integrated via an impressive Annunciator. The building has a large central Atrium that is served by Line Array speakers that have a 3D sound design to allow extremely good acoustics.

The landmark scheme, UCL’s largest single building, offers eight floors of open and adaptable teaching, research, and collaboration spaces, for fields ranging from the creative industries to engineering, robotics, green technologies, and global health – inviting new and interconnected modes of working, and entirely new research avenues and disciplines to emerge. Setting the standard for a new type of university campus, the building is designed to break down siloes and promote and cross-disciplinary learning, thinking, and research, bringing together students, academics, and the public.

UCL East is the biggest development in UCL’s nearly 200-year history. Our East campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in addition to our central London locations, offers exciting new multi disciplinary degrees focused on tackling the biggest challenges facing people and our planet.

A reference from Michael Said, UCL Fire Safety Officer

UCL recently finished a large multi-use building in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, this building is made up of a large atrium, laboratory, teaching rooms, library space and refectory/cafés. the build cost 385million and will be part of UCL’s new East campus.

The construction for the works was with MACE and Sensetech were used for the fire alarm system and Emergency Voice Communications system. My involvement with the project was to review and sign off all fire safety elements of the project and confirm that the building was safety for use and occupation.

While working on the project I had a lot of engagement with Luke Cooper (Sensetech Project Manager) and his team of engineers, from design through to witnessing. The team throughout the project made this process easier but be very engaging and helpful, they had great knowledge of the systems and how to work with the complexity of the building and the course and effect we needed for the building to work with the fire strategy.

While carrying out the inspection of the work it became clear early on of how neat and precise the installation had been carried out and this was noted by the UCL Fire Safety team as being one of the best installations we had seen across any of our projects. This was only made certain when we worked with Sensetech’s commissioning engineer Iain Stevenson, Iain’s knowledge and passion really shows and he is in my opinion one of the best engineers I have worked with.

I look forward to working with Sensetech in the future and would recommend them for any of the future UCL projects. If you would like to contact me for any other information please do, my contact information is below.
